About Shader the Loving Survivor ~ VIDEO | |
Shader was brought to us by a good friend in early July. She walked into the center with this very beat up little terrier. I took one look and gasped ~ who would do this to such a beautiful baby? You could tell right away by his scars, torn flesh and demeanor that Shader was used as a bait dog. He hung his head in defeat, I tried to not look at him but failed miserably. I just couldn't resist the urge to bring him home with me. But knowing that I had to be concerned for the welfare of my cats and dogs, I worried about how this dog that had been attacked and tormented by other animals would react to mine. To test him, I took Shader over to the kittens in the lobby ~ nothing. Then we walked over to the dogs that were crated in the lobby. Barking ensued and Shader jumped back. No aggression, just trepidation. From that moment I was in love! He came home with me and I tended to his wounds and he gained weight and got stronger. Shader has proven to be a testimony to the recuperative powers of dogs, both physically and emotionally. Within two weeks, he was happy, loving, laid back and loving life, the terrors of the past a dim memory.
I love this dog like nobody knows and had every intention of keeping him. However, the voice of reason said, "Do you really need another dog?" OK, I admit it ~ the "voice of reason" sounded suspiciously like Judy on the other end of the phone. I had to admit that I didn't and that my desire was simply based in fear that someone would mistreat him again. I should know better. I've been a foster for Judy, an online screener for Judy and have run adoption events for Judy. I know the process that we put adopters through and I know that Shader will be safe.
So here I am, with a lump in my throat, giving you an opportunity to offer Shader the loving home he so richly deserves. He is wonderful with my dogs, every dog that he meets actually, and all seven of my cats. He doesn't have a mean bone in his body. His only drawback (if you find this to be one) is he loves the couch and the pillows on them and will be up there every chance he gets! I have to laugh as he gets the pillow up under his head and falls fast asleep! He has an abundant supply of love for his humans. I let him stay up there because he deserves to be comfortable and happy. I am going to keep him with me until that perfect family comes along, the one that I know will give him the best home in the world!
