Skip escaped from a trainer who took him from us to help him get over his skittishness. That same day the trainer lost Skip and we tried for 8 months to catch him while he was living in the woods. Skip is back and safe with us now. Skip needs a lot of special time and care.

2.27.23   We continue to see improvement with Skip.   He makes progress in very small steps typically but we notice and get very excited!    He has become more vocal and will howl (loudly so no shared housing please) when he wants something.     He definitely thrives with structure and he is very intelligent.     He now gets excited when neighbors come by walking their dogs where he used to not want to interact at all.   Now he wants to go up to the fence and greet them and will even touch his nose to people's hands.   He does now like to unstuff beds and toys at times and even the stray paper towel rolls that might be in reach..........LOL     He bumps me with his nose to get my attention, usually in regards to going outside or to remind me meal time is coming.

Fall update: Skip is gentle, silly, likes to carry around stuffed animals (he doesn't chew them, just mouths them) and likes to be by his people. He is a very special dog and needs a very special home. He is extremely fearful and it is beyond the level of fearful I have ever seen.  He spooks easily and can only be outside double-leashed (harness and collar), even in a fenced yard. He is very strong and when he spooks, he goes into "flight" mode. His reaction to anything that startles him is to run. He has jumped over 4 and 6 foot fences easily and will not hesitate to do so to get away from anything he deems too scary. We don't know what happened to him before he came to us or while he was loose for 8 months but bikes and motorcycles tend to make him nervous. He does not like riding in the car, doesn't want to even get in it. His safe place is the couch. He spends most of his time there and runs to it if he is afraid. He has warmed up to me (foster mom) but even so, has his limits. He is never aggressive but either runs or howls when he is unsure. You can tell he *wants* to go to people but can't get past his fear. He gets excited when his foster dad comes home and runs around and howls but won't go up for more than a nose touch or a pat. He happily will sit on the couch with just about anybody though once he has gotten used to them. Measures will have to be taken that he cannot get out a door or window as he is strong and fast.    Not trying to scare you! Just being honest from what I have seen during the time we have fostered him. He is a good dog, he just had a bad beginning.

3.17.22 foster update:
Skip is on his 3rd week in a home and is making great strides!

He is walking on leash around the block at night when things are quiet. He’s a very easy dog inside the home. He loves other dogs so we’d love to get him into a foster/adopter with a friendly confident dog that he could follow around. Skip was ok around my house cat.  If you introduce a cat and dog you must do it with care and easy introduction

He’s very sweet and gentle. Looking for a person that will continue to work with him to help him to be the confident dog he’ll be one day!

Skip came to us from a local kill shelter.   If you've never had a Hound before, they are super sweet dogs who are sensitive to their owners' emotions and mannerisms. They want to be a part of their human activities, and afterward, they are very happy to hang with their humans on their couch.
