Description:Becky is a little pup who is going to be a big girl. We were told that she is a cross between a Great Dane and an American Bulldog, and we believe it! The person who surrendered her to us got her free off of Craigs List. Ummm, do I need to give you my Free on Craigs List lecture? Why not.... DON'T DO THAT!!!! If you have a pet to rehome, always charge a fee. There are really bad people out there looking for bait pets or snake food. Hello???? YOU DO NOT GIVE AWAY YOUR PET TO A STRANGER!!!! Furthermore, it is not a good place to get a pet. The person listing the pet is often more interested in getting rid of it than ensuring that it ends up in the right home. That's what happened with Becky. She was adopted by a person who was not ready for her size or energy (I'm not sure what she was expecting!). Plus, Becky may be deaf. So that certainly didn't help either. We strive to match applicants with pets. It is not at all unusual for a person to apply for one of ours, only to have the screener redirect them to a different pet that would probably meld better into their life style. If that happens to you, be smart and take our advice. We know from whence we speak!
OK, about Becky. Sweet puppy, big dog, loving as can be. Again, she may be deaf, we aren't sure. If she is, there are great resources online, including
www.deafdogs.org. Yup, you can teach a dog sign language! How cool is that!?!
7/23 Foster Update:
Well we have Becky and she is so cute and loving, and it doesn't say on the page but she has been taught how to shake! It precious. First thing she did was go and jump right in our pool, running start, my boyfriend snatched her out so fast he was nervous she couldn't swim. We will test it tom. when we can get in with her. I think also she may have dalmation in her, she has light grey spots on her which I figure will get darker. She is great.
Foster Update: She is great. She loves other dogs! She loves the water and is the most loving dog I have ever met. She does great inside, she never goes potty inside, but her true love is to be outside, she loves for you to play with her outside.
*** According to dogbreedinfo.com, the history of Great Danes go way back. Incised on some Greek money dating back to 36 B.C. is the image of a dog very similar to the Great Dane of today. The Great Dane is known as the "Apollo of all dogs." In 407 A.D. German Gaul and part of Italy and Spain were invaded by an Asiatic people (the Alans) who brought with them powerful mastiff-like dogs. In Germany especially, where these magnificent animals capable of overcoming bears and wild boars were much admired, a process of selective breeding was begun. The dogs were crossed with Irish Greyhounds, and the issue was the beautiful, large, thin, agile dog known today as the Great Dane. Despite the fact that they are called Danes in English, these dogs have nothing to do with Denmark. The Great Dane is a gentle giant. Dignified, kind, sweet and affectionate, it is playful and patient with children. It loves everyone and needs to be around people. The Great Dane does not bark much and only becomes aggressive when the circumstances require it. A steady dog, responsible and dependable. Brave and loyal, it is a good watchdog. They need plenty of exercise - at least a good walk a day. The expected life-span is about 10 years, although some live 12-13.
