Description:
Don't you just love MaiMai's ears?  They're why we think she is part Basenji.  Her legs are shorter, reminding us of a Welsh Corgi, so there you have it!  She is a very loving, gentle dog.  We rescued her and her eight puppies from a kill shelter when they were just about five weeks old.  We strive to put litters into foster homes so that they can have the benefits of a family environment.  In this case, we were very fortunate when Jessica offered to take them in.  And because she did, we know just exactly how wonderful MaiMai is!  Read these wonderful updates:

06/14 Foster Update:
The first time I laid eyes on her I thought she looked like an overgrown chihuahua with those big ears.  The people at animal control were right though, MaiMai is so sweet.  I was a little wary about how she would react bringing her puppies into a home with so many other animals  and kids but she just wants to be loved and gets along very well with everyone.  She even allows my female dog in with the pups while they are eating and playing.  My one cat rubs against her and she tries to flea him.  She treats him like one of her puppies and he is happy to be a part of their group.  Thank you for giving me and my family this wonderful opportunity to help.

06/20 Foster Update:
MaiMai is great with kids, other dogs and cats.   She was quickly house trained and is now working on "sit" and "down".  She is catching on very fast and is eager to please.  There are a few singed places on her fur (neck and left side of body) but her fur is getting softer and new hair will grow back.  She loves being brushed and is such a sweet and gentle soul.  She really is an awesome dog.  She is so full of love and graditude. She seems to be very timid, especially around new people.  On the other hand, she completely comes out of her shell on night walks.  She alerts us of deer in the neighborhood with a very distinctive high pitched cry even before my hounds seem to catch the scent.  That was the first time I ever hear a noise from her.  She also seems to be much more confident when being walked with other dogs.  When she goes on a walk with my other 2, she likes to be in the middle of them at all times.  I think she would do very well in a house with another dog.  She is a true gem.

According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the first traces of a dog similar to the Basenji are found in Egyptian tombs and wall drawings of five thousand years ago. Also called the Congo Dog, it was brought to Europe in 1934. English breeders refined it and exported it all over the world. In Africa, it is used as a guide in the forests, to warn against the approach of dangerous animals, and as a very active pack-hunting dog of small game. The Basenji is alert, affectionate, demanding, energetic and curious. It loves to play and makes a good pet, as long as it is handled regularly from an early age. It is very intelligent, responds well to training with a strong desire to please. They can be reserved with strangers. The Basenji is somewhat aloof, but can also form strong bonds with people. It should not be trusted with non-canine pets. They are usually patient, but do best with older considerate children. The Basenji dislike wet weather. They like to chew, so giving them lots of toys of their own would be a good idea. The breed likes to climb and can easily get over chain wire fences. Basenji are very clever at getting their own way, they succeed less by obstinacy than by charm. It has the unique properties of not barking (it makes a low, liquid ululation instead) and of cleaning itself like a cat. It can be described as speedy, frisky, tireless at play and teasing the owner into play. Their strong desire to play can lead to behavior problems if left alone. Most Basenji problems usually involve a mismatch between owner and pet. The owners mistake the adjective "quiet' to mean inactive instead of noiseless; thus, they become harassed by an active, though relatively silent , dog. They have a life expectancy of 10-12 years.
