Sooki is a sweet little Shepherd mix puppy. Mixed with what, we have no idea. The littermates look quite different from one another so it is quite possible that there was more than one daddy. Did you know that littermates can have different fathers? I was suprised when I found out! Doesn't say much for the morals of the momma.... Anyway, this is a precious litter of puppies, each and everyone hoping for a wonderful home!
6/21 Foster Update: Sooki is very smart and has already learned sit, stay and come. She is doing great on housetraining - almost there if you are paying good attention. She is willing to take over the house if not properly trained and understands that she is not the boss. She thrives with consistent postive training, but doesn't do well if she thinks her people are upset with her - (obviously a shepherd trait). A wonderful puppy!
7/9 Update: OK, I know you're not going to believe this, but Sooki was returned today by the people who adopted her 11 days ago. Their reason? This 12 week old puppy is not housetrained. You think!?! Good grief! You know, we try really really hard to screen people well, to make sure that the right pet is matched with the right home, but gosh, I mean, well, really..... Yeah, I'm sputtering here! So, let's be clear here. Puppies aren't housetrained. If you want housetrained, please draw your attention to the kittens. They are near enough born knowing what to do with a litter box. But puppies? No, you have to teach them. That is why we have posted the webpage "Potty Training Your Puppy." (You notice we don't have one called "Potty Training Your Kitten"!!!). mumble..mumble...mumble.... Uh huh, I'm speechless..... The photos of Sooki looking fuzzy are a little out of date now. She is much sleeker and shepherdy looking now. Someone posted a photo but it was so bad I deleted it. Mary, Sooki's foster, has promised to send new ones. I'm still muttering..... not potty trained....ugh!
***According to dogbreedinfo.com, in April 1899, Capt. Max von Stephanitz registered a dog named Horan as the first Deutsche Schäferhunde, which means German Shepherd Dog in English. Known for their tremendous loyalty and courage, they are calmly confident, but not hostile. This breed needs his people and should not be left isolated for long periods of time. They only bark when it is necessary. Serious and almost human in his intelligence, they have a high learning ability. The breed is so intelligent and learns so readily that it has been used as a sheepdog, guard dog, in police work, as a guide for the blind, in search and rescue service, and in the military. The German Shepherd also excels in many other dog activities including schutzhund, tracking, obedience, agility, flyball, and ring sport. His fine nose can sniff out drugs and intruders, and can alert handlers to the presence of underground mines in time to avoid detonation, or gas leaks in a pipes buried 15 feet underground. A quick daily brushing is best unless hair in the house is not a problem. They should be bathed rarely, only once or twice a year to avoid skin oil depletion. Shepherds have a life expectancy around 13 years.
