Mushroom is a sweet 6 1/2 year old girl. She came to us with an umbilical hernia, which we repaired at the time of her spay. She has dry eyes and will need to be on eye meds for life. Mushroom also needs regular grooming to help keep eyelashes/hair away from her eyes...ShihTzus are known for having eye/lash issues :(
She is fine with the other dogs in the household (4 small, 1 medium, 1 large) and really doesn't have any interest in them. We are not sure if it is because she is still not feeling well, perhaps once she feels better she becomes more playful. **
update - she does like to play now that she is feeling better. As soon as she got the right eye drops and recovered from her spay, she has much more energy and is quite playful!
She does like dog beds and listens well. Mushroom is also very smart as she got two different types of e-collars off very quickly!
Foster update 7/27/2019: We have fostered Mushroom for a couple of weeks now and she is a happy, friendly and silly little girl. She is not a fan of baths, but she looks fantastic after she has one:)
Her specialty eye drops make a noticeable difference, and she is good about having them administered. She does not see well and does not always know to get out of the way or move, so she could be a potential trip hazard. This also means she should not be around stairs.
She has made some efforts at playing with some of the smaller dogs in our household, and is always friendly to them. She does "grumble" to let you know if she does not like something...I call it purring.
As with all ShihTzus, Mushroom does get hot very easily so owners needs supervise that she is not outside too long in the hot months. She'd much rather be on your lap:)
Due to her eyesight, Mushroom would be best with older/considerate children and owners who are steady on their feet as she could be a trip hazard and can easily run into toys or things left out. Another hazard would be plants at her eye level, as she has no nose/muzzle to block running into things. My Dad uses a walker and /or wheelchair, and Mushroom has not really figured them out yet.
Foster update 7/13/2019 - Mushroom likes the couch and has figured out how to use the little steps going up to it:) We did find out that her eyesight is not very good as we have seen her run into some things. She will definitely need a family who is prepared to give her eye drops for life and whatever eyecare she is going to need going forward. The ShihTzu breed is notorius for eye issues and owners need be diligent with her eyes and maintain regular grooming as well.
This breed is very loving and is generally good with other dogs and kids. They are a great apt/condo companion as they are low energy dogs. Shi Tzus are good lap dogs and love being with their humans:)
