About Naples the Bunny-Loving Coonhound

  • Microchipped: Yes
  • Owner Experience Needed: None
  • Reaction to New People: Friendly
If you like big dogs, then this is the one for you. She's a big girl, but she LOVES peoples and other dogs. She was found in wandering around the Naples areas on her own. This girl needs a family to love!! Since she is ten years old, we have qualified Naples for our Seniors for Seniors program. If she is adopted by a senior citizen, his adoption fee will be dropped to just $50.

04/07 Volunteer update:
Naples is the sweetest girl! She greets you with wagging tail and a big smile. She is gentle when given treats and is calm in her run. A treasure for any family!

04/29 Foster Update:
OK, I had to include this entire update from Naples' foster.  FYI they are also fostering a rabbit that they found.  Given that Naples is supposedly a hunting breed, this is too funny!
"My husband and I are fostering Naples.  We love her and she is sooooo easy.  If I ever find my camera battery charger, I will take new photos…I think it has been missing since before we fostered Henry too.  Awesome.  The bunny rescue I’m working with hates me too because of this I am sure.  Naples does not act her age!  Even my husband is smitten…and that NEVER happens – particularly when we first pick them up!!"

04/30 Foster Update:
Naples is a love!  She is as sweet and polite as can be!  She politely sits to go outside, wait for her dinner and beg.  She knows sit and shake and is 150% potty trained.  We do not use a crate, she has full roam of the house 24/7.  When you come home or pick up the leash she is a puppy all over again!  Her entire body wiggles and she makes the cutest excited grunting sounds!  When you come home she also barks with her nose pointing up in sheer joy as she wiggles at your arrival!

She gets along beautifully with my two dogs and has no aggression or "alpha dog" tendencies in her whatsoever!  She is eager to please and her tail starts to wag if you just look at her and smile.  She loves to snuggles and get scratched, her favorite spot being right behind her left ear.

She is quite strong on the leash, but we haven't worked on walking yet.  She listens and watches you very intently so I see her picking up walking manners quite quickly!

She doesn't seem to care about my foster rabbit, so I see her being wonderful with cats in the house.  She is not phased by any quick movements or loud noises so she would be great with kids too.

She also has the biggest kissable noise you will every find!!  :)

According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Black and Tan Coonhound was developed by crossing the Bloodhound and Foxhound, in the United States on the basis of its colors (black and tan). Best known as a raccoon hunter, the Black and Tan Coonhound howls as he trees his quarry. The breed has also been used very successful to hunt other types of game such as bear, stag, opossum, deer and mountain lion - even on difficult terrain. It withstands well the rigors of winter as well as intense heat. Timid or nervous dogs may be disqualified from exhibitions. The official recognition dates from 1945. Some of the Black and Tan Coonhounds talent's include hunting, tracking, watchdogging, and agility.
A quick-to-follow, intelligent, loyal and good-natured hunter and companion, the Black and Tan Coonhound pleases hunter and owner alike. The Black and Tan is an alert and eager dog who is very dedicated to his work. Some sources say this passionate worker is a bit aggressive, but will listen to his master. Other sources say he is gentle and friendly with people. Some individuals are protective and are a bit reserved with strangers. They are usually best with older considerate children. Sometimes they can play rough. This dog can be willful, requiring firm, patient and on-going training. They may howl if they are left alone too much. Do not let this breed off the leash in an unsafe area, as they may take off after an interesting scent. Some Black and Tan tend to be aggressive with other strange dogs. There are two types of Black and Tan Coonhounds: show and field. The show types are a bit large
