Description: Selena wandered up to a business near the shelter. She was a mess - emaciated and filthy, and boy did she stink! Our awesome volunteers bathed her and took her out to the sunshine to warm up. She is the sweetest little thing- and I mean little. The vet thinks she is probably around 11 months old and that she may not get much bigger in stature. She’s just a little delicate thing at this point. She weighed 24 pounds to all of our surprise- she looks more like 18 or so. She has lots of scraps and boo boos and her fur was falling out in hunks at first but seems to have stopped that. We do have to keep the tip of her tail bandaged because she wags is so much the end starts to bleed all over the place. She loves to give kisses and lean up against you for love. She’ll even come up in the recliner and curl up on a lap to sleep. Despite her fur/skin condition she is so soft, if you can get over bumpy boney feeling underneath. She is very smart and is quickly learning the basic house rules. She loves kids and is slowly learning to like cats-they aren’t just for chasing-really! She has a long way to go but we will work hard to get her healthy and eventually ready for a new family. She’s going to make an awesome loving family pet!
Foster Update 05/16: She is over 35 pounds now- yeah!!! She is full of love and wiggles and sweetness. At just about a year old, she is the best of both worlds- big dog looks in a smaller dog body! She actually is a great lap dog too! Her favorite thing in the whole world is to play fetch with her tennis ball. She will play until your arm gives out from throwing it! But she’s so good, she brings it right back, drops it at your feet and looks up at you like- DO IT AGAIN! How can you resist that?!? She’s great with kids and cats ( a little too much in my cat’s opinion!) as she wants to play with both of them all the time, especially now that she has discovered toys! She didn’t know what to do with them at first- how sad is that! But now she loves to drag them all out of her toy basket and spread them out all over the floor- especially when I’m trying to vacuum! We are working on her doggy social skills- apparently she hasn’t had much experience with other dogs. She wants to play but hasn’t figured out all the proper doggy etiquette. But she’s learning quickly. She walks well on a leash now and knows most basic commands. She is such a sweet, sweet girl and so easy to fall in love with.
Foster Update 6/5: Selena is a healthy, happy, loving and affectionate dog. She has finally put on some muscle mass instead of just weight and looks great. No more scrawny, sad looking puppy. She's full of life, love and kisses and her whole backside wiggles when she sees you. She is learning how to play well with other dogs and does great with puppies and kids (over 8 may be best-she can get a bit rambunctous). But most of all just wants lots of people love. She will be going for her heartworm treatment next week and will need to be quiet for several weeks, but if it will ensure her a long happy life it is well worth it! She has been through so much -starved almost to death, mistreated and even shot twice (yes, she has 2 bullets in her!), yet she is a loving, affection dog. She deserves a wonderful family with plenty of love to share!
Selena will be undergoing full-blown heartworm treatment on June 8. She will need to be confined to crate rest for the next 6 - 8 weeks after her treatment.
7/7 Foster Update: Selena’s doing really well and we had fun on our trip to Tampa for the 4th. She played with my sister’s dogs and loved the pool. She’s gotten a little chubby with all her crate time due to the heartworm treatment so we call her the love pudge now! She’s super sweet and loves to cuddle with everyone-adults, kids, cats or dogs. She plays well with other dogs but because she gets a little carried away sometimes it would be best for her to have medium to large dogs to play with. She adjusts well to new situations and is always happy just to be around people. But her tail is deadly! You quickly learn to be in front or beside her when she starts wagging that tail! She loves to give love and kisses and wants nothing more than to make you happy. She’s a wonderful dog and deserves a loving home to call her own.
