07/05/2018: Dakotas went a walk and came upon a cat. She showed no reaction at all to the cat. She enjoys the company outside in a playgroup with some of our other dogs. She is very playful.
Dakota was found as a stray and brought to us so we could see to her needs and find her a forever loving home. Since being at PRBJ, Dakota is coming out of her shell plays with all the dogs, and even likes to cuddle with them. She needs leash training and to continue to build her s
elf confidence.
A home with people around most of the day is preferred~ She loves kids and is a great buddy and watch-dog for them. Her behavior towards the man of the house in her foster home leads us to think she was in a negelctful/abusive home in the past where men may have been a threatenting figure.
6/29 Foster update:
Dakota is super friendly. She loved the children and myself; however she did not adapt well to my husband. She was very protective over the children and acted aggressively whenever he entered a room she and the kids occupied. She was also very afraid around him when the kids were not present.
We loved her calm demeanor and affectionate personality. Her timid behavior seemed to be getting better each day that we had her in our home. She rarely went into her cage, unless prompted to do so at night. She did not excessively bark at doorbell rings, and once she was satisfied that the visitors were non-threatening, she retreated back to the room with the children. It was only with my husband that she would continually bark until one of the children called her to return to their side.
I have no doubt she would be a loyal, loving, and protective companion to any family that she connected with. Regrettably she was not able to connect to my husband. Possibly because he is gone most of the day working, and unfortunately to her he may have seemed like a stranger in the house. The kids and I were here constantly, and she may have seen his presence as intrusive. With her past experiences, men may not have shown her a loving hand and she sees them as a threat to the other family members.
Thank you for the opportunity to experience this great relationship with Dakota. I hope whoever she chooses as her next family will love her to pieces.
6-2018 UPDATE:
ONE YEAR LATER, Dakota was returned to us because her owners could not care for her. They did not give us any warning before bringing her back and she never went to the vet for the whole time they cared for her. They mentioned that she is very scared and never came out of her shell since they adopted her at four months old. They also said she was not a good fit for the family, which did not give us much information about her personality or behaviors. Based on our staff's experience, she acts as if she has been abused. We are unsure what she has experienced in her past home, but she has warmed up to our staff at our center slowly. She lived with four young children in her past home, and is so heartbroken to not have a home anymore. She is very quiet and shy.
Dakota stares out of the front door seeing if her family will ever come back for her.
After two days with us, a nice woman came in and sat on the floor in front of her cage. This was the first time Dakota showed any emotion. She stood up and walked to the end of her cage for a sniff. She went back in her cage, but then again when the woman was stood up to close the crate, Dakota walked up to her and the woman took her for a walk. We know there has to be a family out there that will protect her and love her forever! Will you be the one to provide her forever home? If so, please submit an application online for consideration.
