Description: Avit is one of a litter of six puppies we rescued Christmas week. Their momma, Vania, was picked up by Aniamal Control, and gave birth the week before Christmas. The adminstrator called Judy and asked if there was any way we could take this little family ~ she always worries about the babies on the concrete floor. Well, gosh, what was Judy supposed to say? Of course we'd take them. We are always blessed by such wonderful fosters, and thank goodness, because Vania's milk soon dried up and we needed folks who would bottle feed. Did I mention how wonderful our fosters are? Avit is scheduled to be neutered on March 2nd and will be ready for his forever home a couple of days later.
1/17 Foster Update: I'm taking care of Avit and Katie while their regular foster is out of town for the long weekend. Oh, the fun we are having! Avit is so affectionate. He likes to start in your lap and then work his way up to your shoulder. Such a doll. Just a bit ago he and Katie were playing in the yard with my two dogs for about 15 minutes. I let them in and a short while later couldn't find Avit. That puppy had climbed into his crate, crawled up onto his stuffed animals and fallen asleep. Really, does it get any cuter than this? Avit is a handsome fellow, tan with white shoes, tail tip and nose. He is a beauty!
2/23 Foster Update: "Avit" is Hebrew for "friend" and this puppy has sure lived up to his name. He is truly a great friend to my dogs and his sister. He is so laid back. He lets Katie (his sister) and Ty my dog just bite all over him and he just lays on his back and says OK. He does return most of the play bites but just to say I have had enough. He loves to sleep cuddled to either Ty or his sister. He loves to play and has never met a stranger. When he meets another dog or human he runs with open wagging of his tail and giving kisses. He especially loves kids when they enter a room. He sleeps in a big crate with his sister and most of the time has no accidents. 90% of the time is house trained. He has few accidents in the house. He is a wonderful dog! He will bring lots of joy to your house if you adopt him.
***According to dogbreedinfo.com, in April 1899, Capt. Max von Stephanitz registered a dog named Horan as the first Deutsche Schäferhunde, which means German Shepherd Dog in English. Known for their tremendous loyalty and courage, they are calmly confident, but not hostile. This breed needs his people and should not be left isolated for long periods of time. They only bark when it is necessary.
Serious and almost human in his intelligence, they have a high learning ability. The breed is so intelligent and learns so readily that it has been used as a sheepdog, guard dog, in police work, as a guide for the blind, in search and rescue service, and in the military. The German Shepherd also excels in many other dog activities including schutzhund, tracking, obedience, agility, flyball, and ring sport. His fine nose can sniff out drugs and intruders, and can alert handlers to the presence of underground mines in time to avoid detonation, or gas leaks in a pipes buried 15 feet underground.
A quick daily brushing is best unless hair in the house is not a problem. They should be bathed rarely, only once or twice a year to avoid skin oil depletion. Shepherds have a life expectancy around 13 years.
