Description: Marlow is a great big goofball, a lovely playful Shepherd. I love his ears. They have thus far not learned to stand up on their own. I had a friend who had German Shepherds. I remember how when they were puppies she had to tape their ears to make them stand up. I don't know if that's always the case or what, but I kinda like the look that Marlow is sporting! This pup was a stray who was found by very kind 87 year old gentleman who hoped to provide him a home. With 5 acres of property, you'd think Marlow would do well but being a big puppy, he accidently knocked the gentleman over. Realizing that perhaps this wasn't the best situation, we've been asked to find Marlow a new, more appropriate home. That won't be a problem because this is such a good dog. He is very good with children and loved to play with the 10 year old granddaughter. He also wanted to play with the 5 pound Yorkshire Terrier. Of course, being a Yorkie, the dog wanted to take out Marlow, but Goofball had no idea... The first day at our kennel, he barked at the cats on the other side of the door and then ran away ~ big baby! Now, remember, Marlow is a puppy and needs to be trained. Left to his own devises, you can expect him to chew and dig and do all those things that endear adult dogs to us fosters. So please, no matter which dog you adopt, invest in training. You'll be glad you did! Marlow already knows Sit and Paw. Imagine all the other things he can learn!
Foster update 1/2/09: Well I just had to take home Marlow. I have his double in a female version at my house and when I saw his cute face and wonderful personality I couldn't resist! I'm glad I didn't because he is an amazing dog. He is most definally all puppy (this is bringing me back to my 2 year old dogs puppy days..ahh). He loves to play with other dogs no matter how much they do not want to play with him. My female German Shepard mix was basically attacking him (because he would not leave her alone) and he was still all sweet and loving! Licking her teeth that were bared at him! lol! He has the typical energy of a Shepard mixed with the eagerness to please. He knows the sit command that thats about it. He loves my cats and finds its fun to chase them. I'm sure he is just being a puppy and since its his first night with me I know he will learn the rules of play with my cats..which is don't play with me! lol! He is a WONDERFUL dog whom just wants to be near you and loved! I had some trouble getting him into the car to bring him home..but i'm sure that he will learn very quickly a car ride with me means dog park time!
Foster update 1/3/08: I freaking love this dog! We went to the dog park today and he LOVED every dog he saw. Ran and played the whole time. He loves to swim and is very sweet with big or small dogs. I didn't worry about him at all..he just ran around and was the star of the dog park. I completely trust him with other dogs, people and kids. He still likes to "hunt" my cats..but is learning that this is not the correct thing to do! He is very smart and a quick learner!
***According to dogbreedinfo.com, in April 1899, Capt. Max von Stephanitz registered a dog named Horan as the first Deutsche Schäferhunde, which means German Shepherd Dog in English. Known for their tremendous loyalty and courage, they are calmly confident, but not hostile. This breed needs his people and should not be left isolated for long periods of time. They only bark when it is necessary.
Serious and almost human in his intelligence, they have a high learning ability. The breed is so intelligent and learns so readily that it has been used as a sheepdog, guard dog, in police work, as a guide for the blind, in search and rescue service, and in the military. The German Shepherd also excels in many other dog activities including schutzhund, tracking, obedience, agility, flyball, and ring sport. His fine nose can sniff out drugs and intruders, and can alert handlers to the presence of underground mines in time to avoid detonation, or gas leaks in a pipes buried 15 feet underground.
