Do you love big, goofy dogs? If so, you're going to love Lugger! This 77 pound pup languished at Seminole County Animal Control for 3 months before we pulled him out. Poor guy! No one saw the gem that he is. Not suprisingly, he developed some food aggression habits while there, but that is a behavior that is easily dealt with. And he doesn't like little dogs. Great with larger ones, but not so much the little guys. He was heartworm positive but has already been treated. Now all he needs is someone to love him. I hope that he doesn't have to wait long. He is simply too wonderful to be missed!
1/6 Volunteer Update:
The fact that Lugger hasn't been adopted KILLS me. You know I'm a cat person, but so help me, Lugger might be my favorite animal at the Adoption Center. He's the sweetest, most gentle dog and he has those big dreamy eyes. He loves everybody and does that fantastic big dog "lean" - which is so darn endearing. If I had a house with a yard....
1/30 Foster update:
I had Lugger for about 4 or 5 days and found him to be a wonderful dog. He showed no signs of dog aggression(He played outdoors w/my other 4 dogs) or food aggression toward humans (he may have some toward other dogs but I never feed my dogs together anyway...not a problem) He DOES have crate aggression which makes him almost impossible to show at PetSmart. I'll happily talk with anyone considering adopting him! 407-671-9199 ~ Kathy
2/9 Foster Update:
Our family recently fostered Lugger, and I just wanted to let everyone know what a wonderful dog Lugger is.
Lugger is a big dog, but he doesn't jump on people and doesn't even get on the furniture. He is the perfect companion. He frequently went on long run/walks with my son that he seemed to enjoy, but he was equally as happy just lying by my chair in the evening while I read or watched TV and lying by my bed at night. If I went to the laundry room or the kitchen, he always followed and laid quietly as I did my work. I think he is the sweetest, most companionable dog I have ever seen. He is so gentle, I think he would make a perfect addition to any home.
Unfortunately, he did have an encounter with our cat. The first few days Lugger was at our house, he ignored the cat. The cat, however, took several swipes at him, and Lugger may have just been defending himself when he went after the cat. The cat was unharmed, but I probably wouldn't recommend he be in a household with cats.
We enjoyed Lugger, and I hope he can find a permanent happy home. He deserves it.
2/28 Foster Update:
We have enjoyed Lugger and he gets along great with my 9 year old daughter. He loves to lay his head in her lap for pets. He is housetrained and goes to the door when he wants to go out. He is a big dog that does not know he is big. Lugger does not get up on furniture, which is amazing! He follows you through the house, if you get up so does he. It is a hoot!
03/24 Volunteer update:
Lugger is luv! He yawns sleepy eyes at you as he stretches from his bed to gently take a treat from your hand. A treasure for any family.
5/20 Volunteer Update:
I am so sad ~ Lugger was adopted last weekend and returned today. He has developed separation anxiety and his new family was not able to deal with it. To give them credit, they tried three different crates but he got out and did some damage. Can I tell you that I have personal experience with canine separation anxiety and it can be overcome? My dog squeezed through the bars of his crate (and he was 45 pounds) and ate through a wooden door. Our vet gave us an anti-anxiety medication (Composure?) ~ we gave it to Tenakee 20 minutes before we'd leave. Within three weeks we had weaned him off of it and could leave him loose in the house. He even overcame his fear of thunder. Truly, it was amazing. Here at Pet Rescue By Judy we have had similar results with Happy Traveller. All Lugger needs is an understanding, loving home that will help him work through this is
Our pets love to sleep on Kuranda beds, but we do not have enough for everyone. If you would like to donate a bed at discounted price, please click here.
