Stella went on a play date and sleep over with a foster, her dogs, and cats. She sat in the passenger front seat just taking in all of the sights during the drive to the foster home. Stella was a great representative of how adaptive dogs can be with new people and animals. Stella is a very happy and playful girl. Immediately upon introduction, she and the foster brother ran circles around the yard before going inside and continuing to play in the house. She found the basket filled with dog toys and got most of the toys out to play with.

Because Stella is playful and energetic, it would be best for her adopter to be a strong pack leader so that Stella learns the rules of the family and house. She responds well to being told what is acceptable whether told by a human, dog, or cat. She assimilated very quickly and easily into the new pack. She gets attached to her human easily and wants to be with her pack.

There are several ways that Stella seems to initiate play with dogs which is pushing her body up against their body, "air snapping" of her mouth (not biting), and sometimes wanting to put her arms and body over their back. Again, she obeys by what the dog indicates is okay or not okay. In her pictures you can see her playing with her red foster brother. They love wrestling together. She does "want" to play with cats but has respected what the cats have told her about the rules for playing. When needed, she has responded well to the "Leave it" command when given by the foster mom.

Later in the day, Stella attended a busy and loud festival. There were a lot of people and dogs with which Stella had no problems. Two things that Stella did not like at the event were moving motorized vehicles somewhat close to her and a loud drum corp. The drum corp really scared her. However, she did not react to all of the other loud music, many people, etc. at all. Her play date day was a busy one for Stella but she did not get grumpy at all.

If you have not seen the "Happy Dogs and Cat" video created to Pharrell Williams song "Happy" and you are considering adopting Stella, you may want to watch it as that seems to be Stella's theme for life:

When received by Pet Rescue by Judy, Stella was a mom to 7 bouncing puppies.  They are weaned now and she is spayed and looking to retire her mom duties and find a forever home to call her own.

Stella has been hanging out in the PRBJ lobby, greeting guests with a friendly hello!  She loves to run and play and would love to be a part of an active family!

Foster Update 12/8/14:

Energy Level – very playful, enjoys playing with other dogs in our home and at the dog park, loves walks, car rides, chasing a ball and lying near someone.

Food - eats 1cup of Taste of the Wild dog food twice a day and several treats.  She takes treats gently and can catch them.  She waits her turn when taking treats with my dogs.

Adaptability - quickly adjusted to us, our home and dogs.  Meets new people and dogs well.

Behaviors – confident and very friendly.

Human Social Skills – very affectionate and social - loves people and was comfortable with our family the first day.  Stella greets new people playfully.  She enjoys being in the room with us while we watch TV and loves being petted.  She seems to expect to be treated well.  We have seen no signs of neglect or abuse.  She wants attention and to be loved.  She gets excited when she sees me in the morning.

Animal Social Skills – enjoys playing chase with our dogs around the yard and puppy wrestles with our 2 year old dog.  She is comfortable with other dogs at the dog park.  She is respectful of dogs she meets and usually waits for them to initiate the chase.  She really enjoyed running with a 10 month old Boxer puppy.  She keeps an eye on me and I never have to call her when I’m ready to leave.  She follows me to the gate and sits while I leash her.

Obedience – knows “Sit”, “Down”, “Over”, “Come” and “Wait” at the door.   She enjoys walking with my dogs.  She gets excited and pulls some initially and then settles down.  She seems to want to please.

Training - house broken and crate trained.  She learned to use our dog door the first day.  She was a little rambunctious and mouthy when she first came (no teeth).  She has responded well to our calm, firm corrections.  Regular exercise also helped calm her.

Ideal Home - Stella would enjoy a home with a person that wants a loving companion.  She would enjoy having a home with another playful dog but wouldn’t mind being an only dog if she gets attention from her person or family.  She would enjoy a fenced yard to explore and someone who would throw her a ball or toy to chase.  I think Stella would be a great family dog because she’s friendly, playful and seems to prefer being near a person when she’s not playing.

*** According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Labrador Retriever is a loving, affectionate, lovable, patient dog. Once known as the "St John's Dogs," the Labrador Retriever is one of the most popular breeds in the United States. Originally from Newfoundland, Canada the Labrador was trained to jump overboard into the icy waters to haul fisherman's nets to shore. Specimens were brought to England in the 1800's by English ships coming from Labrador, where the dog's fine retrieving instincts were honed and developed. One of the best family dogs and canine companions because of their gentle, loving disposition, the highly trainable Labrador also excels in drug detection, as a guide for the blind, and service dog for the disabled. The breed is also an outstanding obedience and field trial competitor. Highly intelligent, loyal, willing, and high-spirited. Lively and good-natured, they love to play, especially in water - for they love to swim. They have an excellent, reliable, temperament and are friendly, superb with children and equable with other dogs. They crave human attention and need to feel as though they are part of the family. Labs are easily trained. These dogs are watchdogs, not guard dogs, although some have been known to guard. They have a life expectancy of 10-12 years.
