Louie is the just the sweetest and most handsome boy.... and a pleasure to be around! He is crate trained, but he also has had no accidents when left uncrated and alone in the house. Louie is also trained to go to the door when he needs to go out. He is food motivated which helps his training! Louie will make a great addition to a good home. He even walks well on a leash....won't you come meet Louie today?

Foster Update 8/17/15:
His energy level is down a bit and I don’t have to run him on the treadmill anymore - he is quite happy walking outside for a mile or two.  His food consumption is 3-4 cups of dry food.  Working on reducing his barking when the doorbell rings.  There are still some dogs he doesn’t like, and some he loves.

Foster Update 9/11/14:

  • Completely crate and housetrained
  • Loves chasing lizards
  • Loves to run after a ball for a short period but is able to eat through a lot of toys
  • Loves to run across big fields (less inhabited dog parks with squirrels and lizards are favorite)
  • Has learned to swim and is comfortable in the pool
  • Walks pretty well on a leash but he is strong
  • Can be mouthy in a playful way
  • Is selective about which dogs he likes
  • Will not hurt a cat but if they run he will chase
  • Very food motivated and learns quickly with that as a reward
  • Loves to walk on a treadmill
  • Easily excitable and rambunctious but can be brought down to a calm state quickly
  • Barks very little (mostly at strange noises outside the fence)
  • As with all lab/lab mixes needs lots of exercise
  • Digs when trying to find a lizard or insect
  • Will jump up on people in excitement
  • Working on come when called
  • Will sit for any treat - LOVES treats!!!
  • Eats about 4-5 cups of dry food daily
  • Loves going in the car and is very well behaved
  • Ideal home would be one where he gets a lot of love, exercise and structure.

Louie is a complete sweetheart and will make an absolutely great family addition but he is still a puppy and needs consistent guidance on proper and acceptable behavior. He would be too strong for most children.  Louie does not need a lot of personal attention but does need a lot of exercise/stimulation or he will steal your socks!!

General Information about Hound Dogs
All of the dogs listed below belong to the collection of dogs referred to as Hound Dogs. As implied by its name Hound Dogs have been bred to chase (or hound) a quarry by sight or smell, or a combination of both senses. Sighthounds have exceptional eyesight, combined with the speed and stamina necessary to catch the intended prey once seen, typical examples being the Greyhound and the Whippet. Hounds which rely strongly on the sense of smell to follow the trail of a prey, such as the Bloodhound, quite literally follow their noses, speed and eyesight is of less importance.

Characteristics and features have been introduced and strengthened by breeding from animals who already demonstrated the desired traits. Breeding for appearance was only introduced in the 19th Century. Before this time dogs and puppies were bred to increase useful abilities and traits helpful for the duties they were intended for. Thus, the various hound breeds were initially introduced to help man according to specific requirements such as hunting and running, flushing out and driving game, vermin hunting, guard duties and tracking.

In this day and age only a few hounds still undertake these tasks, but nevertheless, they still harbour the skills and characteristics that made the original Whippet dog breeding program successful. The Hound Breed Group of dogs differ in that some hunt by scent and others by sight. Many hounds are kept in packs, in outdoor kennels. Any dogs and puppies belonging to the Hound breeds require a significant amount of exercise as they have high stamina levels suitable for hunting quarry. There are some breeds in this group who make a distinctive ' baying ' sound - invaluable information should be considering puppies.
