Nemo was surrendered to us by his owner, who could no longer care for him. He is shy at first but will warm up to you if you are gentle and pet him. He is ready for his forever home and would make a great lap dog!

4/6/15 Foster Update!    Aww, Nemo is still waiting for his furever family to find him!    We know you are out there somewhere!    He is so sweet and just wants to be loved.   If you have a fenced yard, at least 1 other dog and are home much of the time, he might be just the right guy for you!

FOSTER UPDATE 2/9/15     Nemo is fully housetrained!    He is so smart and when it is mealtime or treat time, he runs into his crate to wait.     He would love to have a home with somebody who is around most of the time and would like a lap dog.    I just know the right family is out there for him and he would bring a lot of joy to them.   He does startle easily but is a bit braver than when we first started fostering him and does some exploring out in the backyard now, so his curiosity is starting to come out now that he feels secure.    He will nudge for more petting and can never get enough.

FOSTER UPDATE 1/16/15

Nemo is such a lover and cuddler and if he is not running around or playing with one of the other dogs, he is either curled up in a bed or on a lap.    His favorite thing is to sleep curled up with 2 of the other small dogs in a bed!    He still startles very easily and can be skittish if he is unsure of something or hears loud noises.    He is having very few accidents now and usually because we have not been paying attention to him needing to go out.   He has started learning how to tell us - sometimes - but still not all the time.   He definitely needs a home with somebody around most of the time.   He is a very good eater and gets quite excited at meal time.   He know when we start passing the food out and runs into his crate to wait for it.    He is SUCH a good boy!

FOSTER UPDATE 12/19/14

Nemo is doing very well and is probably 95% housetrained now.    He has been getting very playful with one of our other small dogs and he just zips around the dining room table like a racehorse!   I've been told he is a "Deer Chihuahua" which would account for his very long legs and big ears.    He is such a cuddler and such a sweetheart.

FOSTER UPDATE 11/28/14

Nemo had a dental cleaning last week and also had 16 teeth removed so he is having his food soaked for now.     He is feeling quite well now and is finishing his antibiotics today.    House training is going well and we continue to see improvement.     He is suspicious when people first come over and does not want to go to them but as long as they do not make sudden movements, it is not long before he is asking them for attention too!   He is not a fan of the cooler weather and likes to like on one of the dog beds with 2 of the other dogs.    He would rather be in somebody's lap though and I think he would spend all day in a lap if he could!  He is such a super sweet boy!

FOSTER UPDATE 11/19/14

Nemo MUST be adopted to a home with a fence.  He is so skittish and so fast that if he were to get away, he would be extremely difficult to catch.  Housetraining has it's good days and it's bad days. He still has at least 1 "accident" almost daily.   If I get distracted and don't keep tabs on him, I am likely to find a puddle or present, yet he has no trouble sleeping through the night.   I do not put him down in the morning until he is outside! He loves to cuddle, even more so in this chilly weather and likes to bury himself under the covers at night. He likes to carry his food and water dishes around and collect them in one of the crates.  He is so funny as he goes prancing by with one of them in his mouth as if he is so proud of himself!  Nemo would do best in a home where his family is home most of the day as he loves the attention.

FOSTER UPDATE 10/30/14

Nemo is coming out of his shell and did real well at the Oviedo Adoption Center this past weekend.    He has made a big breakthrough with housetraining.   He still does not tell us he has to go out but we take him out often and keep an eye on him and he hasn't been sneaking off to leave us a present, haha.     He has a great time playing with 2 of the other small dogs in our home and is very gentle when playing with our toothless furbaby.   He is very fast and loves to run around the dining room table and up and down the hall when playing.

FOSTER UPDATE 10/16/14

We have had Nemo for about 3 weeks now and he is a real sweetheart who would love a home where somebody is around most of the time and he can cuddle and be on a lap!

*He has long graceful legs with one white paw and a beautiful shiny coat
*He loves his people and will follow you everywhere
*He is fine with the other 5 dogs in our house and will play with them on occasion
*He has the cutest little pink lips and nose!
*He very seldom barks or makes any noise at all, even when the others are!
*He likes to chew on his small wishbone nylabone while lying in his crate (door open!)
*Keeps his eye on you and wants to be in your lap as much as possible!
*Easily frightened by loud noises and raised voices
*Needs to be watched outside as he is afraid just to be outside and forgets what he needs to be doing
*Loves to eat which is twice daily and he gets limited ingredient food
*Takes treats ever so gently and runs into his crate while waiting to get one
*He likes to carry things into his crate, like the water bowl
*Curious about what is going on but can be quite skittish
*Working on housebreaking – does not really know how to tell you he has to go out
*Needs to go out *immediately* after eating
*Would do best with somebody around most of the time

Foster Update 9/7/14:

Nemo continues to be loving and sweet. He is getting better at going to the door when he wants out. He also knows "do you have to go potty." He occasionally has an accident indoors and still has accidents in his crate. I believe he has accidents in his crate because I'm at work all day long. He would probably do best with someone who is home more often. He loves to be with the family and is a happy go lucky dog. He is still skiddish of people and surroundings that he is unfamiliar with.  Nemo will make a great family pet. He is constantly by my side and wants constant interaction and love. He is a great lap dog.

Foster Update 8/7/14:
Nemo continues to be a sweet little guy. He loves his foster family very much. He still likes to pull clothes and blankets off the bed. Likes to hide under the bed when he feels scared. He is done tremendously better with his potty training. He has an accident maybe once or twice a week. He however is still not crate trained. He continues to be very loving and affectionate. He occasionally chases his tail. He would make a great addition to a family with older kids or  a single person.

Foster update 7/2/14:
7/2/14 : Nemo is still a sweety-pie. He is full of energy and always happy. Still skittish of loud noises and strangers. Doesn't care to go outside. He does his business quickly and then wants to come back inside. He is a little more adventurous during early morning and at night though so stays outside a little longer to smell everything. Still doesn't let you know when he has to go potty but if you stay on top of him he will not have an accident. Still has accidents in his crate. Nemo would make a great family pet to a home with teenagers or couple. Would probably prefer a single person as he has one favorite person and clings to them. Does great at bath-time. Doesn't care to have his nails clip so it takes me awhile to clip them.

Foster Update 05/07/14:
Nemo continues to be a sweet, loving, affectionate, little guy. He reminds me of a toddler- always wanting to be around his mommy. He even reaches for me like a child reaches for his mother wanting to be picked up. He loves to lick my face and give kisses.
He is still skittish and afraid of being outside, loud noses and strangers.
He has gotten better about going potty outside. He still doesn't let you know that he has to go and I have made him stay outside longer until he does his business. No matter how many times he runs to the sliding glass door wanting in, I just stay outside with him until he goes potty. He hasn't had an accident in two weeks.
Nemo would do best with someone who can give him all the undivided attention and love that he needs. He gets very attached; even though he loves everyone in the family, he has his favorite person who he devotes himself to. Nemo is a great companion/lap dog.
Foster Update 04/16/14:
Nemo continues to be loving and affectionate. He is full of energy when I come home from work from being crated all day. He continues to be leery of strangers and will often hide under the bed when I have company over. I'm still trying to work on the potty training. Some days are better than others. He can be skittish of going outside which can sometimes make it difficult for him to go when I know he needs to go. He winds up doing it in the apartment. You really have to stay on top of him when it comes to the potty training. He would probably do best with someone who is home more often as he has a lot of pent up energy when I come home. Nemo loves to lick your face and chew on fingers. He likes to pull blankets and clothes off the bed and drag them around. He occasionally chases his tail. Loves to run around in the apartment. He plays with my dog pretty well but will show his jealous side if I show any affection towards my dog. Might do best as an only dog so that he can get all the love and attention he desperately needs.

Foster Update 3/9/14:

Nemo is very shy and skittish and get nervous easily. Once he gets to know you he is very loving and affectionate and follows you around everywhere. He is always happy to see me when I come home from work. He can be playful and is a good lap dog. He likes to be held and petted. He does get along with my dog but occasionally snaps at him when I try and show my dog affection. He is very quiet and doesn't bark so would do well in a house or apartment.
Nemo would do good in a quiet home with older children or an adult couple. Nemo is scared of loud noses, quick movements and isn't fond of going for walks because it's too scary for him. I did take him the Baldwin Park for the Doggie Dash just to get him exposed to things. He preferred to be held mostly instead of walking and he shook most of the time.
Nemo does good at bath time. He does have a collapsed trachea so he will need to have a harness. You will notice he has a tendency to cough after drinking water. He has been taking cough medication to help have less coughing episodes.
If you are looking for dog to baby and spend every second with you Nemo is the one. He is like velcro stuck to your side once he is becomes comfortable with you.

Staff Update 1/27/14. Nemo just came back from foster. His foster loves Nemo's sweet personality, but she just got a job that will keep her away from home most of the day. She thinks it's best that he's with someone who is home a lot. He is well behaved except that he is not housetrained. However, he just went to another great foster, and she is working with him on this. (As you can see, Nemo is very popular!)

According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Chihuahua is the oldest breed on the American continent and the smallest breed in the world. Native to Mexico, nonetheless it seems to have been introduced by the Chinese. It was only brought to Europe at the end of the nineteenth century. The Chihuahua is named after the Mexican state of Chihuahua where he was brought to the rest of the world by travelers. This breed is believed to have been sacred to the Pre-Columbian Indian nations. The Chihuahua is a popular, economical companion dog. Courageous, extremely lively, proud and enterprising, it gives and demands affection. Bold and saucy, it moves swiftly to avoid being stepped on. Chihuahua's are strong-willed, intensely loyal and become very attached to their owners, even to the point of jealousy. They like to lick their owner's faces. It is undeniably suspicious of people except for its owner. When strangers are present, it follows its owner's every move, keeping as close as possible. This breed may snap at teasing children, after all it is too tiny to get away. The Chihuahua must resort to his sharp teeth in self defense. It is not recommended for children. He can be noisy and may require patience to housebreak. Many owners simply paper train this breed. The Chihuahua hates the cold and may shiver, although this may be due to high metabolism as much as temperature or anxiety. It will tolerate and even appreciate a warm sweater on cooler days. They are good little dogs for apartment life. Although it is tempting to carry these dainty creatures about, they will keep fitter if taken for walks. A body harness is safer than a collar. Don't think that just because he is small he should be confined to a small space. Chihuahuas have a life expectancy of 15 or more years.
