Meet Nakano!  He is a charming young boy that is seeking his forever home.  All he asks is that you give him a soft bed, some squeaky stuffed animals to play with, and a lot of love!  In return, Nakano promises to be your best friend and a great companion.

Nakano is a great dog and any family will be lucky to have him.  He is fully housetrained and crate trained and even enjoys eating his meals in his crate!  He is quiet and well-mannered and is a very easy dog to have around.  He doesn’t have any bad habits……well, except for de-stuffing his babies sometimes!  He loves to play and go for walks and snuggle up on his bed for a nap.  He thinks car rides are great fun, and is always up for an adventure.  Nakano thrives in an environment where he understands the rules and wants nothing more than to please his people, so if you set clear boundaries with him he responds very well.

Nakano loves EVERYONE – dogs, cats, people….all he wants is for someone to love him as much as he’ll love them.  He is continuing work on his obedience and socialization skills as he can be a bit shy sometimes, but learns very fast and wants to please.  To help Nakano transition into his new family, one session of in-home training and one Group Obedience & Agility class with Natural Instinct Dog Training will be included in his adoption fee.  Also, as Nakano is a volunteer favorite, a fundraiser has been established to include a care package with his adoption fee.

Foster Update 8/14/14:
Appearance :  Red/white, ~55 lbs, moderately strong

• Energy Level Moderate:  We do 1-2 mile walks most days.  He is very energetic and playful when I first get home from work, but after we do our evening walk, he lays on his bed and sleeps most of the rest of the evening.
• Food He is eating 2 cups/2 times per day of Evanger's Whitefish and Sweet Potato formula
• Adaptability Moderate to low.  Nakano has a tendency to be fearful.  We have been working on socialization and trying new things, but he needs to continue to improve his confidence.  He WANTS to enjoy new experiences, but can be nervous when exposed.
• Behaviors Needs to be supervised with cats still.  Not aggressive, but can be overly playful.  Has very high prey drive, so would likely not be good with small animals in the yard, or outdoor cats he doesn't know.  Still working on socialization, can be reactive when he's nervous.  Does ok with new dogs, but needs to be introduced properly, can be reactive if dogs approach too quickly.
• Human Social Skills He WANTS to be friendly with people, but can be nervous in new situations.  He can be particularly shy with men, but seems to love kids and women.  We have been working on socialization.
• Animal Social Skills Does fantastic with the dogs in my home (3 large dogs of mixed sexes); however is very alert and cautious with dogs he doesn't know.  If a dog approaches quickly that he doesn't know, he may snap at them.  However, when introduced properly he interacts very well.  He is very playful with other dogs; however, I would not recommend he be taken to dog parks at this time.  He is ok with well socialized cats.  A cat that is skittish or reactive would likely trigger his strong prey drive.  He has had mixed reactions to horses and needs continued socialization in this area.
• Obedience Sit, leave it, look, go to your bed, off, walks fairly well on a leash (must be reinforced - will pull if allowed to do so)
• Training Housetrained and crate trained
• Personality Quirks He's adorable!  He has this cute little deer hop he does when he's feeling frisky and he Loves to give kisses!  He is a great companion and loves to snuggle.  On the negative side, he will put ANYTHING in his mouth including fluff from his toys, plants, or plastic/paper he finds while we're going for walks.  He is good about letting me remove objects from his mouth (if I can grab them before he swallows) but he needs to be carefully supervised with his toys and with any plants in the yard.  He definitely needs NO ACCESS to anything toxic.
• Ideal Home Nakano is a wonderful dog.  However, he MUST HAVE a home that is committed to him and to furthering his training.  He needs a home with large/strong dog experience that will provide him with consistency and structure.  I strongly recommend that he be crated when left alone, particularly if there are cats or other small animals in the house.  He needs moderate exercise to keep his mind and body healthy and relaxed.  And Nakano would LOVE to have a playmate, his favorite thing in the world is wrestling with and chasing his foster sisters.  He bonds with his people very strongly and enjoys going with them for rides or to new places, but he needs to take it in at his own pace so he needs a handler that is aware of canine body language and is a confident leader to help him gain confidence too.

Earlier Foster Update 1/25/14:
Nakano has only been with his foster a few days, but has already learned so much!
• Appearance: Color: Tan and white with a cute patch over right eye, weight unknown.
• Energy Level: Moderate. Nakano is still a puppy and has bursts of energy.  He also likes to have his "down" time too and will rest quietly on his bed
• Food: Nakona LOVES food, anything is food.  He knows "leave it" and "drop it" and you can take things out of his mouth without him getting upset.
Adaptability: I'm not sure if he has ever lived outside a kennel, but he was very wary of everything at first.  Unfamiliar sounds (like piano, cars, etc) become familiar pretty quickly.  Also, he has learned how to go in  and out a doggie door and is quickly potty training.  I let him out of his crate and off his leash a little longer every day and so far he's done fabulously.  He is a super quick learner and loves to please his people.
• Behaviors:   Nothing unusual so far.
• Human Social Skills:  Nakano is very friendly and loves to play. Because I don't want to overwhelm him with new stimuli, we've gone slow in playing with other dogs and people. He loves kids.
• Animal Social Skills: He plays well with my other dog, a female Pit.
• Obedience: He is very obedient.  He does need training and we are working on sit, lay down, and leave it
• Training:  He is progressing very nicely on house training.
• Personality Quirks:. So far, Nakano is a very smart puppy.  He loves people and would do anything you ask.  We all think he has progressed amazingly in the short time he has been out of the shelter with learning to be in a family.
• Ideal Home.  He is typical of his breed in that he loves to be #1 dog to his people.  I would also recommend that he be in a house with kids that know something about dog behavior.  He is still in that clumsy puppy stage, so he trips a lot and sometimes trips up his people.

Nakano Spend a day at the park with one of our volunteers. Here's what she had to say about him on 12/22/13
***When he's in the car, he lays down and goes to sleep while you're driving.  He was an angel in the car.
*He is very sociable and well mannered with all types of people.  He greeted everyone that wanted to visit with him with enthusiasm and politeness - no jumping, but lots of kisses, if given the chance!  He LOVES to give kisses!!
*He showed no fear or apprehension of bicycles, wheelchairs, motorcycles, fishing poles, etc.  He seems to be very well adjusted socially.
*He walks very well on the leash, most of the afternoon he walked with a drape in the lead - no pulling, whatsoever!
*He was a bit nervous of the slippery floor in Petco, but he was perfect with the crowd, the dogs, the new experience, etc.  He was more interested in checking out the offerings than anything else.

All in all, he is a really great dog!  I already loved him, but even I was pleasantly surprised at how well he did in the new environment, with someone he doesn't really know all that well.  Thanks again for letting me take him out!  I had a great time with him and I think he enjoyed himself as well.

The Terrier is a good-natured, amusing, extremely loyal and affectionate family pet, which is good with children and adults. Almost always obedient, it is always eager to please its master. It is an extremely courageous and intelligent guard dog that is very full of vitality. They are highly protective of their owners and the owner's property. It is usually very friendly, but has an uncanny ability to know when it needs to protect and when everything is okay. Excellent with children in the family, they have a high pain tolerance and will happily put up with rough child play. As with any breed, they should not be left alone with unfamiliar children. Used as all around working farm dogs, they were referred to as "the poor mans horse". They are strong and generally weigh between 40 and 70 lbs. They have a life expectancy of about 12 - 14 years.
