About Geno the Cuddle Bug Terrier Mix

  • Microchipped: Yes
  • Housetrained: Yes

The Orlando Police found Geno and his companions wandering the streets. If you want a buddy to take for walks in a downtown setting or to an outdoor restaurant, this might be the guy for you. He would love for his adopter to include him in social outings. Bikes and people running past him did not phase him in the least. He was walked side-by-side with a volunteer's Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and they were great together. Geno was adopted, but the person had to bring him back because he became too overprotective of her and would not let her other dog come near her. His owner said Geno played fine with her other dog in the backyard. We have seen him play with the dogs here at the shelter, so we know he *likes* other dogs, but feel he would be happiest as the only canine in his new home so as not to share the attention of his people.

Foster Update 8/10/15:
• Appearance:  He's a lightbrown color as seen in his pictures.
• Energy Level  He has a moderate energy level. He is very flexible. Sometimes, we have lazy days. Other days, we go on jogs or walk for miles. As long as it  isn't too hot out, he loves to be outside and play! He can play in the water for hours!
• Food Geno eats twice a day generally in the morning, a little bit throughout the day, and another meal at dinner time. He's eaten a few brands of food and adapts to the changes if needed.
• Adaptability Geno is very smart and adaptable. He is social and loves to be out on car rides and trails. Sometimes I take him with me to friends' houses and he plays very well with their dogs, who are the same size as him.
• Behaviors Geno is well-behaved. He is a little excited when he goes on walks at first but he is fine after he calms down. He doesn't ever chew on anything besides his bones and toys, and has never ruined anything in the house. If I use a firm voice with him, he knows to settle down and does it immediately whether it be barking at someone at the door, etc.
• Human Social Skills Geno is a friendly dog. He gets very excited meeting people, but once he settles down he is fine. He can be protective but not in any way has he ever been violent towards any guests. He doesn't have a lot of experience with children since he has been with me. He is protective of the house or car he is in but not aggressive. He is a little suspicious of men he has never met before, but once I tell him "Geno they are ok" he knows to calm down and greet them in a friendly way.
• Animal Social Skills  Geno likes to be dominant. He is a leader, but loves to play with other dogs. He has been around many dogs while I've had him and he loves to play rough and play tug-of-war or just run around, but has never hurt any dog he's been around with me. He is gentle with puppies and is just fine with cats. He would be best in a household where he is the only dog, but he likes cat and doesn't bother them at all, even if they bother him! He plays softly with them.
• Obedience  Geno is very obedient. He sometimes jumps on guests but it's only because he gets too excited and if you tell him off, he knows to get down. Geno can sit, lay down, shake, rollover, stay, and come to you on command. He learns new tricks very easily and quickly. He is very easy-going.
• Training  Geno is totally house trained. He has never had an accident since he's been with me. I let him out every few hours and he does just fine. He doesn't like being in a crate. He will go in it but he hates it. I leave him out and just shut my bedroom door, and he has never destroyed anything while I'm gone. He just lays on the couch and sleeps. If he is put in a crate, he will likely somehow escape it because of his crate anxiety, but he really doesn't need one since he is just fine being left out.
• Personality Quirks  Geno has many quirks and is a dork! He loves to cuddle and will lay in bed all day with you if you never get up. He loves to be around people and go out. He snores and sleeps all night with no disturbance. He knows the words "squirrel, walk, car ride, and treat". So if these words are ever said, you better follow through with your promise! He will turn his head sideways and start whining to go on a walk or get his treat. He loves to watch and try to chase squirrels. He is very smart and can spot a squirrel from inside of the house. His funniest quirk and favorite hobby is chasing shadows. Every day when the sun is setting, shadows and reflections from the sun appear on the wall and he will be watching and trying to get the shadows all afternoon. He is so entertaining! He will also let you dress him up in funny costumes, and he won't mind it. He also LOVES water. He will play in water for hours.

• Ideal Home  Geno's ideal home would be a place where he could run around outside and enjoy playing. His owner would ideally be someone who is patient with dogs and likes to take him along with them on car rides, etc. Someone who is firm with him would also be beneficial for him. As stated before, he doesn't have a lot of experience (since he's been with me, Im not sure if he did before) with kids. He likes to be active but can also have lazy days. Someone that is looking for a companion, and maybe even a protective dog would be great for Geno. He will be your best, loyal friend!

Good with dogs? Yes, as long as they aren't living with him.

Good with cats? Yes

Good with kids? Of all ages? Unsure about small kids.

Housetrained?-- Yes!

Foster Update June 2015:
Leash-  Loves to walk and run.  He starts off excited but is easily corrected. He does not go after anything he sees on the walk.  He minds his own business.  He is very strong but after he recognizes you are stronger, he is not a problem.

Quirks- He loves to spoon at night time and he snores. He loves to be with people.

Barking-  He only barks if someone is at the door.  Very well behaved, no nonsense barking

Tricks- He know how to sit and give paw.  He loves to play fetch.

Cats/Dogs- He does not bother the cats.  They sleep right next to him on the bed. He welcomes the new fosters without an issue. He gets along with my dogs and does not bother the puppies.

Crate- Geno has the run of the house and does not get in any trouble.  He is completely house trained and has not had an accident here. I have not had him crated here.

Car rides- He is a great passenger in the car and loves to go for rides.

The Terrier is a good-natured, amusing, extremely loyal and affectionate family pet, which is good with children and adults. Almost always obedient, it is always eager to please its master. It is an extremely courageous and intelligent guard dog that is very full of vitality. They are highly protective of their owners and the owner's property. It is usually very friendly, but has an uncanny ability to know when it needs to protect and when everything is okay. Excellent with children in the family, they have a high pain tolerance and will happily put up with rough child play. As with any breed, they should not be left alone with unfamiliar children. Used as all around working farm dogs, they were referred to as "the poor mans horse". They are strong and generally weigh between 40 and 70 lbs. They have a life expectancy of about 12 - 14 years.
