*** Make sure you read this all the way through to our foster update. You will be amazed at the transition this fellow has made! Thank goodness for our foster families!!! ***

Franky is a precious Papillon mix. He is very friendly and likes other dogs. He was rescued from a kill shelter by a dear woman who is losing her house. She asked Judy to find homes for her four little rescued dogs, So sad.... The good news is that she has provided a good, honest assessment of Franky:

"Franky is a sad case. When I got him was already two days past the day he was to be put down and was definitely going the next day. He was lethargic, had a severe case of heartworm, had kennel cough, and was emaciated.

As he regained his health, his demons came out. He would go ballistic at the sight of a brush. If you touched him in a particular way, he would strike out. He was schizod ~ he loved being held, wanted to be close, and just didn't seem to know how.

He has bitten me at least four times, most recently in December. However, I still believe I'm more at fault than he. He is a barker who hates anyone on his street (how dare they!). He gets along with all of my other dogs except Samantha who tries to bully him. He loves tummy rubs and I started giving him massages when I got him which he loves.

Franky is easy to bath, but combing is still a challenge. It's easier if you put him up on a table. I still don't know why. I think he has some sort of allergy. He scratches constantly. He is on Frontline, so I don't think it is fleas. He loves to sleep with you, but is not a snuggler. He loves sitting on your nap and he follows me from room to room."

We are fortunate to have Franky in a foster home with Bob and Darla. They are very experienced with dogs, their behavior and nutritional needs. I was sure they would make great progress in solving the mystery that is Franky, and boy was I right! Read what they shared with me after just two weeks:

2/2 Foster Update:
Franky is such a special little guy! He has the sweetest face around and just loves to have belly rubs. He really enjoys to curl up in your lap and just keep you warm.
He is playful and likes his little stuffed babies and big long rawhide roll ups. He seems to me to be a mix between Papillion and long hair Chihuahua. He is in a lot of ways still a pup. Not sure how old he really is, but seems fairly young. I have had absolutely NO behavior problems with this little man. NO biting (even when taking things from him or putting my fingers directly in his mouth to check gums and teeth).
I also have not seen this dog doing any scratching outside the norm. Franky is a very happy well adjusted little dog. He gets on well with our female dog, though we have no cats to test him with.
Franky plays well with our neighbors 4 yr old son-letting him pick him up. He does NOT bark excessively, though the stray cats beyond our fence do get his attention at night. He will stop when reprimanded however.
Franky is a joy to have around. He will stand up and beg for a treat. He knows sit, stay and the command "no". We have to walk him on a leash, as he does want to stray so he can explore.
This dog will do well in any situation I believe.

2/4 Foster Update:
Franky lets me brush him just fine. He has not even tried to bite, and as far as I can see he has no food allergy.
Just between you and me, I understand Franky came with a "suitcase". This dog just wants to be a dog! Dont try to dress him up and I think he is perfectly happy!

According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Papillon is one of the oldest breeds of dog, with a recorded history in Europe going back nearly 700 years. The breed was originally called the epagneul nain or dwarf spaniel, and sported spaniel-type dropped ears. The dog was later known as the Continental Toy Spaniel (or sometimes just toy spaniel), and this tiny breed is recognizable in 13th through 15th century Italian frescoes. It was featured in many paintings of the Renaissance period; in fact much of the breed's development is known because of its depiction in p
