About Dominic the Italian Greyhound

  • Microchipped: Yes
  • Housetrained: Yes
  • Owner Experience Needed: None
  • Reaction to New People: Friendly
Dominic is a handsome Italian Greyhound The original Velcro dog, he is initially shy but warms up quickly and even does well with cats. He is looking for a new home because his momma is losing her house. She has asked Judy to find a home for her four little rescue dogs. She obviously loves her dogs ~ Dominic even has a barcode tatooed on his leg to prevent him from being lost. Dominic is very friendly, loves children, dogs and cats. He is typical of an Italian Greyhound is that he is somewhat high strung. As his momma described him, :

"I'm most worried about Dominic. Everything is trauma to him. He is scared of everything. He seems to do much better with another dog; he loves Samantha. An outgoing dog brings him out of his shell. He loves being out in the back yard. If he can't sit on your lap, he will snuggle beside you or nestle his head under your armpit. He is also content on the back of the couch behind your neck. He sleeps right next to you under the covers whether it is in bed or on the couch. One of my favorite things is that when I take a nap on the couch (not enough room for him to sleep next to me) he sleeps on my back or side, under the covers of course! He gives great hugs!!!"

Foster update 1/2: A bit about Dominic. He is a wonderful guy! Very loving and of course a complete Velco dog! He enjoys people as well as dogs. He goes to the dog park everyday to socialize with other people and dogs of all sizes! He was a bit afraid of my bigger dogs (40-60lbs) the first night but has since warmed up to them all. He currently spends alot of his time with my friend who owns two IG's (sam and lilu) whom are 10 years old. He gets long with them very well! He likes my cat as well and sometimes in playful moods will bark and run around playfully at the cat..my cat of course turns her head and walks away! (she isn't much of a player..lol). Dominic is completely housetrained and uses a doggy door that he can go out of all day long while we are away at work. It took him a couple of days to fully understand the doggy door thing.but he has it mastered now! He did "mark" the house the first night, but has since stopped. He enjoys cuddling under the blanket and sleeping on the top of your head at night! He is what i would say a classic IG..a bit nervious, playful, loves to be on your lap, and enjoys eating! He is excellent with all people and especially kids!

According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Italian Greyhound is a very old Greyhound. Interestingly, a dog similar to the Italian Greyhound of today was found in a 6000 year old Egyptian tomb. Like the Greyhound, this breed was brought to Europe by the Phoenicians. The breed was later developed by the Romans. As evidence, a small Greyhound was found in an ancient lava flow in Pompeii. During the sixteenth century, this delicate dog became popular with European nobility, and is portrayed in many paintings of that time. The breed was favored by Catherine the Great of Russia, James I of England, Anne of Denmark and Queen Victoria, among others. Frederick the Great of Prussia liked his little Italian Greyhound so much, he even took one to war with him. When his Italian Greyhound died, he buried him with his own hands on the grounds of his Sands Souci Palace. In 1991, Frederick's family granted his dying wishes and transferred his remains to Sans Souci, and placed them beside his little Italian Greyhound. A nineteenth century African chieftain was so taken with these graceful dogs that he offered 200 cattle in exchange for a single specimen. The Italian Greyhound is an excellent companion dog.
The Italian Greyhound is a gentle, submissive and affectionat
